My field supervisor let me run the newsroom for the past month. In my district the media specialist have to run the morning news announcements. I learned how to operate the different tools in the media news room. I'm glad that I am learning how to run the newsroom because when I become a media specialist I will need to know how to use all the equipment.
This is my last week and I have enjoyed every second. I learned so much in the practicum. I got a chance to display what I learned in this program. Now I can send people to my website to show off what I learned in this program. All the late nights, tears, and almost want to throw in the towel had paid off. I am ready to start my new chapter in my career as a media specialist.

This week I attended the Georgia Educational Technology Conference in Atlanta, Ga and I had a great time. The conference offer so many classes that was informative. I got a chance to network with people in my field and other field. I didn't want to leave the conference because I was enjoying myself and learning a lot. Some of the classes that I attended was:
1. I learned the benefits of using immerse reader. Immerse reader is a tool to help struggling readers and now Microsoft have immerse reader built the program. I think that is great because it can help struggling readers and build the students confidence level. 2. Another tool that I am using now is Classroomscreen. This website helps teachers with classroom management and extension to a whiteboard. Some of the features are timer, a noise level app, voting which can be use as a ticket out the door, and so much more. I really love this website. 3. Future Ready Library Resources for the 4C offer a lot of resources that I can use as a media specialist. Since I am a new media specialist I was happy to write down the resources that was presented.
This week I completed the activity report which was very informative. One thing that I learned that using infographic makes it easier for readers to view the information. Since administrators are busy all the time, using a inforgraphic to present your information will make them interest in viewing the information. When I become a media specialist I will make sure to use infographic to present my reports. https://www.smore.com/9jb5k
This week I presented my professional development workshop to staff. I was nervous because I had to speak in front of adults. Now when it comes to speaking in front of kids I have no problems but I overcame my fears. As I continue with the workshop my confidence level went up because the staff was in tune with my presentation. At the end of the workshop the staff told me how much they enjoyed my presentation and ask if I can do another workshop. At first, I told them that since I don't work at this location it will be hard for me to come back to present another workshop but I thought about my online module. I told them I might can do an online module in the future for them and they said it was a great idea. This week I learned the importance of giving workshops and online module.
I was able to sit down with my field supervisor to go over the program evaluation rubric. We discussed each category which made my field supervisor think about what she can work on in her media center. At the end of the meeting my field supervisor stating that she is going to create a new goal for next year. This rubric also made me see what expected of a media specialist. I had thought what I am going to do when I become a media specialist. The Judy Serritella Exemplary Library Media Program Self-Evaluation rubric was an excellent rubric to help media specialist see what areas are considered basic, proficient, and exemplary. This week I continue to check-in and check-out books in the media center. I helped the media specialist set up the media center for the Book Fair next week. I got a chance to learned what it takes to set up a book fair in the media center and the paperwork that goes along with it. It was fun to get my hands dirty again. Also, I can't wait for the Book Fair to start next week because I will get a chance to run the register and learn how to submit the paperwork at the end of the day to the bookkeeper. This was a fantastic week. I did my collaboration with a second grade teacher. The topic was on Juliette Gordon Low. After collaborating with another teacher and playing the role as a media specialist I now understand why it is important for a media specialist to collaborate with teachers. Also, I created a need assessment for my professional development workshop. The assessment really helped me understand what the staff needed from me. In addition, I know what kind of information to include in my presentation. This made me feel excited to present the information because I know I am providing information that they need. Also, I noticed the staff is excited about attending my workshop because I have received emails about me coming to their school. Collaboration Pictures Professional Development Workshop This week was a busy at my school. I continue to check out and check in books in the media center. Also, this week I started teaching my reading enrichment unit in the media center which I am excited. In addition, we had representatives from the Atlanta's Falcon and the mascot come to the school. My media specialist was absent so I had to take pictures during the program which was fun. Overall, I had a great week at my school. This week I was able to visit Elite's Scholar Academy and Pointe South Middle School. I enjoyed going to each school to see how the media center was run. When I visit Pointe South Middle School the media specialist told me that her struggle was getting students to check out books. The media specialist is going to try new incentives to get the kids into the library. Next, I visited Elite's Scholar Academy which was a totally different environment. The school is a magnet school so I saw a lot of parents volunteer in the media center. The only struggle that the media specialist is having is getting the teachers to collaborate with her. She told me teachers will tell her they want to collaborate but never do. Her solution was to go to the classroom and collaborate with the teachers which I thought was a good idea. She also bring books to the class for students to check out. This week was very informative about how different elementary, middle, and high school media center is ran. I learned so much from each media specialist and they gave me good advice on things that I can do when I become a media specialist. One thing that I heard repeatedly was build a relationship with the teachers and administrators. Pictures of Pointe South Middle School Visit Elite Scholars Academy I continue to check out and check in books. Also, I continue to shelves books in the media center. This week my school celebrate Grandparent's Day. The Principal gave the media center a low budget due to the district cuts back. So the media specialist and I was responsible for serving a light breakfast. We purchase apple juice, orange juice, and muffins. Also, we took pictures during the program. Our school didn't have a big turnout so everything worked out find. This week my media specialist showed me how to catalog (update MARC Records) new books that arrive to the school. When the delivery guys brought in 12 boxes of books my eyes stretch. I thought to myself that I got my work cut out for me when I become a media specialist. I ask the media specialist how long it normal takes her to complete this task by herself and she told a week and a half. My media specialist open a box to show me the process. After showing me what to do it was time to go to work. So I got a book and start cataloging. My first box I moved like a slow a turtle because I had wanted to make sure I was doing it correctly. I notice doing the school hours we wasn't able to get much done because of classes and interruptions. We had to stay after school to complete the task. I process 4 boxes so I was proud of myself. Oh! since my media specialist order her books from the same program that the county use the only thing we had to do was stamp the books, label them, update the MARC records , find space for new books, and shelve them. This week was a great week because I learn how to update MARC Records. My take away for this week is when cataloging plan to stay late and expect not to get a lot done during school hours. This week I continue to shelf and organize books in the media center. Also, I started practicing doing check-out and check-in books. I was kind of nervous because I am a perfectionist but the kids and media specialist was patience with me. I learned so much about the Follett Destiny program that my county use. Today, I got a chance to experience a lot of issues like overdue books, etc. One of my take away this week is that I need to have procedures in my media center in order for transition to run smoothly. Checklist Item # 3 MembershipI feel it is important to network with other people in your profession. I decided to join American Library Association because they offer a lot of resources and a great place to network with people in your profession. Below is a copy of my membership. This week I continue to practice organizing and shelving books. This week my media specialist introduce me to the system they use to check-in/check-out books. Also, I had a chance to do a mini lesson with a class. I read a book to them and pause in between to ask students questions to check for comprehension. So far I am enjoying spending time in the media center and this encourage me to keep going in my practicum and all work will be worth it at the end. My first week working in my primary media center was getting a chance to meet with my media specialist and coming up with a plan for this semester. My media specialist gave me a tour of the library and showed me how to organize and shelf books. Each day I will practice organizing and shelving books. This will help me learn the media center. |
