Reflection
I feel it is essential for a media specialist to plan, develop, implement, and evaluate school library programs, resources, and services in support of the mission of the library program within the school according to the ethics and principles.
During this program, I was able to use professional selection tools to weed books. I also was able to catalog book and upload MARC records during this practicum which gave me a lot of experience. I was able to apply what I learned in the textbook to real life weeding and catalog. I feel this experience will help me when I become a media specialist.
Also, I was able to create a digital citizenship project which taught the students how to stay while online. Digital citizenship was a great project because they are many predators out there and students need to beware and know online safety tips since many kids use the internet.
During this program, I was able to create a budget plan, evaluate policies and procedures, and create a library layout. These activities gave me a different look at the media specialist job. I learned that the media specialist job is very detail and more than what the average person may see a media specialist doing in the media center. Also, I applied for a Ezra Jack Keats Mini-Grant which showed me how easy it was to apply for one and how time-consuming it was to complete. I learned that some media center budget might get reduce which mean that media specialist has to look for other resources to support their program and grants are a great way to try to receive extra funds for the media center.
I believe in continuing being an effective media specialist you have to collaborate with students, teachers, administrators, and community members. I had created a strategic management plan which taught me how to practical use the data and information to align with the resources, services, and standards of the school mission. Also, how to use the information to address the needs of the diverse communities.
