Reflection
As a media specialist, I feel it is important to promote reading for learning, personal growth, and enjoyment. Being a media specialist, I feel like it is my responsibility to instill that love for reading. Having the knowledge of different genres and the latest trends in children’s and young adult literature will help me assist the students in finding books that they are interested. I understand that every child is different and that they have a distinct interest in books, so it is my duty to keep the media center up to date with the latest books.
In this program, I have become familiar with a wide range of children’s, young adult, and professional literature in multiple format and languages to support reading for information, pleasure, and lifelong learning. Classes such as Children’s Literature (FREC 7332) and Early Adolescent Literature (FRMS 7331) expose me develop a collection of reading materials in print that can support the diverse developmental, cultural, social, and linguistic needs of P-12 students. Being knowledgeable of a wide range of literature will make me be a competent media specialist.
Also, FRIT 7234, collaborative lesson plan taught me how to collaborate with classroom teachers to reinforce a wide variety of reading instructional strategies. I learned how to integrate what the teachers are teaching in class with media specialist lesson which is essential. Also, in my practicum, I got a chance to collaborate with a teacher which showed me the benefits of working with other educators.
During this semester I created a Fartsy Claus video to promote leisure reading. In the video, I talked about a book that I enjoyed reading and gave a summary of the book and told the students why I like this book and why they should read this book.
